Working Together for Landscape, Wildlife and People

The shingle spit is a special but fragile place. We do not want to stop people using the spit but we need to work together to manage access and limit damage to the valuable habitat and species which use it.

For you to enjoy the Ness, while protecting it, please observe the following:

  • Keep to the grassy areas near the river shore.
  • Only follow marked routes to the sea and observe local signs.
  • Please walk and fish below the beach crest.
  • Do not disturb breeding birds or other wildlife.
  • Do not take dogs on to the Ness except on the public footpath.
  • No open fires, these can damage habitats and wildlife.
  • Take all your litter home.
  • Leave no trace of your visit.

The National Trust manages Orford Ness Spit. New Orford Town Trust own and manage the river up to mean high water mark. We all have a responsibility to look after this area.
